World’s first 4K HDR Movie recording in a smartphone2

World’s first 10-bit 4K HDR Movie recording in a smartphone

Xperia XZ2 Compact combines Sony’s memory-stacked smartphone image sensor with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor to achieve HDR Movie recording with 10-bit colour depth. 10-bit colour uses the BT.2020 (Rec.2020) colour gamut and Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) HDR standard to store and reproduce video with 1 billion colours. Other smartphones with 10-bit colour sensors currently compress the saved video down to a colour depth of 8-bit (16.7 million colours).

World’s only smartphones with real-time 3D capture3

World’s first smartphones with real-time 3D capture

Xperia XZ2 Compact captures 3D objects with the new 3D Creator. 3D Creator from Sony uses the device camera to capture real-time 3D objects/scans via the device’s camera. During capture 3D Creator displays the scan on-screen and provides useful feedback during the process to successful capture a water-tight 3D scan. The scanning time is very quick (15-60 seconds) and any editing can be performed on the device. The resulting scan can be printed, shared or used for avatar creation, gaming and in augmented reality. 3D scanning is available out-of-the-box and does not require the installation of additional software. All processing is performed locally on the device so a data connection is not required to generate the mesh.

Best Battery Performance of the Leading Premium Smartphones

In February and March 2018, Strategy Analytics undertook an independent assessment of the battery performance of Sony’s Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact smartphone compared with Apple iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S9, LG G6, Huawei P10 and Oppo R11 (being the “Leading Premium Smartphones” as defined by Strategy Analytics as top selling smartphones globally). All tests were conducted in Strategy Analytics’ facility in Milton Keynes, UK. Battery performance was benchmarked in an active use scenario. This involved using the device for approximately 16 hours in a 24 hour period, for a basket of typical usage scenarios (calling, texting, web browsing, social media, games, camera, music and video). Additionally, the batteries of all devices were subject to drain by a common basket of active applications, and by the receipt of a range of alerts across the testing period. Using a luminance meter, the display brightness was set to approximately 150 Nits on each device. Sound volumes were set to maximum. Other than this, default settings were maintained for all devices. SA measured the time taken for each device to fail through battery exhaustion. Testing was conducted twice under each scenario and the average time taken to discharge the battery is reported in these results. Sony’s Xperia XZ2 lasted 36 hours 1 min on average until battery exhaustion under conditions experienced by a typical smartphone user. Sony’s Xperia XZ2 Compact lasted 34 hours and 20 minutes in the same scenario. This performance represents a leading position for Sony’s Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact against Leading Premium smartphones. The closest leading premium competitor was LG G6 (which lasted for 32 hrs 35 mins on average).
